San Gorgonio Pass Wind Farm

This wind farm on the San Gorgonio Mountain Pass in the San Bernadino Mountains contains more than 4000 separate windmills and provides enough electricity to power Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley. As of January 2008 the farm consists of 3218 units delivering 615 MW.

From Interstate 10 take the Palm Springs/Indian Ave. exit. Go north on Indian Ave. and make an immediate left turn on the north frontage road also known as 20th Ave. Go 1.25 miles and the windmill tour office will be on your right.

Please make reservations at least 24 hours in advance. Tours are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather. There are four tours available daily: 9AM, 11AM, 1PM, and 3PM. Off season hours may vary.

The wind farm operates 300 days a year, no small feat as these turbines require constant 14 MPH winds to produce energy. One of the three largest wind farms in California. There were a few windsmiths out doing maintenance while we were visiting as well!
